Bordeaux

Bordeaux, located in the Southwest of France is a port city on the Garonne River, and the capital of the Aquitaine Region. It is divided into two parts, to the East and West of the river’s bank. It normally experiences mild winters and warm summers. The city is famous for its wine industry which dates far back to the 8th century, with over 700 million bottles being produced annually today, ranging from everyday varieties to the more festive and classy.

The city is cultural in its own way, being the first in France to have an architecture exhibition and the Arc en Reve, an esteemed research centre. Cinemas , theatres and festivals of all types are common. It is also well connected by air, road and rail, and has its own international airport called the Aeroport de Bordeaux Merignac. The public transport system contains trams and buses and in some cases, boats as well.

Bordeaux has some beautiful architecture to offer which is why it is a popular destination for tourists and media producers alike.

One such example is of the Pont de Pierre, commissioned by Napoleon and completed in 1822. It is a 500 metre long bridge that was bought by the town in 1861 and compares to some of the most magnificent constructions in Paris.

Close by is the Saint Michael Church, with a steeple 114 metres tall in height, the second tallest in France. The structure has now been repaired after some damage caused by a lightening strike and a hurricane in previous years. It remains an important landmark of the city.

The biggest church in Bordeaux is known as the Saint Andre Cathedral, which was part of the Santiago’s Pilgrims World Heritage. This is where Louis VII married his fiancée Eleanor of Aquitaine, but not much remains of the original church. The Tour Pe Berland is a 50 metre high tower which can be climbed to get an aerial view of much of the city. It was constructed in the 15th century.

Bordeaux is packed with an impressive set of museums with the best of artwork on display. An example is of the Museum of Fine Arts, only a few yards from the Cathedral, containing a collection sourced between the 17th and 20th century. The Museum of Modern Arts, Museum of Decorative Arts and Natural History Museum (displaying fossil specimens) are among other prominent ones.

This explains why the city was classified as the City of Arts and History, as it is rich in culture, architecture and a number of notable historical events. Yet this is balanced out with its metropolitan nature, with its streets holding wonders for the enjoyment and need of all.
