Lyon
Lyon is located in East-Central France, in the region Rhône-Alpes – its residents are called ‘Lyonnais’, and it is the second largest French urban area, after Paris.
An international airport is located 12 miles to the East of the city, this being the Saint-Exupéry International Airport, and the city is well connected to other parts of the country through the road, rail and public transport network.
Of fame in the city of Lyon is the Place Bellecour, a large plaza which is renowned all over Europe as the largest clear square, meaning it is free from any vegetation or other obstacles. Owing to its central location, the Bellecour metro station is located here, as well as the Lyon Tourist Office and Lyon Post Office among other notable stops.
A must-see construct is the Metallic Tower of Fourvière, referred to as Tour métallique de Fourvière in French. This is an important landmark, a steel tower of which has much in common in appearance with the Eiffel Tower itself. It was constructed in the 1890s as a secular monument by the local council, but its purpose is merely as a television tower today. Nonetheless, it makes for a beautiful view, especially when lit up at night.
For a mini tour back in time, the Musée des beaux-arts de Lyon is the perfect vehicle. It offers a wide range of collections from a diversity of locations, from Egyptian to classic European pieces. It contains 14th to 19th century European paintings; medieval, renaissance and other relatively modern sculptures, and various antiquities from Ancient Egypt. Another striking feature is the ‘Medallier’, which contains some 50,000 coins and medals, making it the 2nd largest collection after that found in Paris.
On the more natural side of the city, the Jardin botanique de Lyon is a free-of-charge botanical garden located in the Parc de la Tête d'Or. It contains 8 hectares of gardens, first established in 1857, and is one of the largest of its kind in all of France. It has a vast range of roses, lilies, shrubs, peonies and temperate plants. Other unique species such as temperate plants, cactus and carnivorous plants can be found in some of the greenhouses.

city, and it has a wonderful landscape with rivers and hills all converging
by the city centre.
