Charles de Gaulle Airport – Paris

Known as Roissy in French, the Charles de Gaulle Airport serves as the main international airport in France as well as one of the world’s main aviation centres. It derives its name from Charles de Gaulle, who led the French Free Forces and also founded the French Free Republics. It is one of Europe’s most frequently travelled airports and ranks 2nd only, to London Heathrow.

It consists of three terminals, with Terminal 2 being exclusive to Air France with the recent exception of a few other airlines, and Terminal 3 being exclusive to charter.

The original avante-garde design of Terminal 1 has seen some modernisation. It has the one building for checking-in and baggage reclaim, with 7 satellites (each handling a maximum of 5 aircraft) for arrivals and departures. The Véhicule Automatique Léger has to be used to reach the terminal.

Terminal 2 comprises seven terminals, 2A-2G joined together through passageways. A transfer bus is required for reaching 2G however, which is slightly separate to the other six.

Terminal 3 only comprises one hall.

The airport is connected to the suburban rail network called the RER, which runs around 3-4 services every hour. A TGV service also connects the airport to several French stations from Terminal 2. An automated rail shuttle is also now in operation, and the Roissybus goes to Paris from Terminals 1 and 2.

The Duty Free at the airport has a range of outlets to visit including some famous French fashion houses that bring to customers the latest in Parisian trends at reasonable prices. Books, stationary and other gift items can also be found as well as a range of restaurants at both terminals 1 and 2 such as McDonald’s and La Terrasse de Paris.

VIP lounges are available where stationary and office facilities can be consumed. Help desks provide all the necessary information about the airport as well as travelling in Paris. A pharmacy and other essential medical facilities are available if needed and toilets and parking facilities for the disabled or those with special needs have been provided for. Luggage can be stored at the train stations and a lost and found service is also in operation for the benefit of all travellers using the airport.
