Perpignan is located in South-western France. It is close to the Mediterranean Sea and has a Spanish touch owing to the fact that it was the capital of Majorca in its history. It then became French following the Treaty of the Pyrenees. The city is famous for its wine and fruit markets, freshly grown on the its fertile soil. It is a brilliant tourist spot owing to its past and to its natural and constructed wonders as well.
The Palace of the Kings of Majorca, or Palais des Rois de Majorque overlooks the city, and is a grand combination of a palace and a fortress with lush gardens surrounding it. It consists of three courtyards and has a rather gothic feel to its architecture, with two chapels called the Queen’s Chapel and Holy Cross. Most of the fixtures including doors and stairs are made from cut stones such as red and blue marble. A free guitar festival is held here in August, called the Guitare au Palais. Musée Des Beaux Arts Hyacinthe Rigaud, also known as the Rigaud Museum was founded in 1820 and opened in 1833 when M de Capdebos made some generous donations of work to the city of Perpignan.
At the end of World War II, famous artists of the likes of Picasso, Chagall and Cocteau spent their time immersed in artwork at this museum, and their collections, among others are presented in the gallery courtesy of the government and other donors. La Loge de Mer was established in the 14th century and rebuilt during the Renaissance. It served as a stock exchange and maritime tribunal for Perpignan, and now after further development, the ground floor holds a modern café and restaurant called Le France. In the 14th-16th century, it was known as the ‘Lodge of the Sea’ and the Venus of Maillol is also now housed here.
The Perpignan Cathedral, known is French as Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Perpignan is a Roman church, as well as a national shrine of the city. The Castillet is a fort that dates back to the 14th and 15th century, which once served the purpose of defending the principal gate in the grasp of the city. It is a splendid red brick building, and has a colossal tower that can be climbed to get a clear view of the city.
It is now also home to the museum called the Casa Pairal, which is all about Catalan folk culture. Perpignan is also famous for its achievements in Rugby and has a musical tilt in its culture as well.
