Nimes
Nimes is located in Southern France, a popular tourist destination with a rich history. The word Denim (blue jeans fabric) derives its name from this city, and it is very famous for its textiles. Denim was first manufactured here and exported to the USA in the 19th century. Some of the most widespread Roman remains in Europe can be found here.
The Arena of Nimes is a Roman amphitheatre that dates back to 70A.D, and was constructed in the time of Emperor Augustus. Medieval housing was its prominent element, but was removed during the time of Napoleon. Nonetheless, it is one of the best Roman reserves, and now serves the purpose of a bullring, where two annual bullfights, among other events such as concerts, are held. It can house more than 16,000 viewers and also features a cover and heating system.
The Maison Carrée is another Roman preserve – a temple built by M.V. Agrippa, dedicated to his sons Gaius Julius Caesar and Lucius Caesar. However, in the 4th century when Christianity became Rome’s official religion, the temple was converted into a Christian church to prevent its demolition. It glows of Vitruvian architecture, with a small interior where occasional art exhibitions are held. Despite undergoing various stages of restoration, the Maison Carree is a source of much inspiration to buildings like the Virginia State Capitol in New York.
Another great wonder some 20 km from Nimes is the Pont du Gard, a 50 km long aqueduct, built in the first century by the Romans to supply water to the city. It is an impressive display of engineering skill, the optimum blend of functionality and aesthetics. It was a must-visit for the French journeymen masons, and their names and hometowns can be found carved into some of the stonework. Restoration work is being planned so a new multimedia centre can be opened in the area for recreation purposes.
An assortment of brasseries and pizzerias can be found in boulevard de la Libération and boulevard Amiral-Courbet harbour, as well as the squares. Some of the well-known eating out spots include La Truye qui Filhe, the family-run Le Chapon Fin, the extravagant La Belle Respire, and for some traditional goodness, Ophélie is a great option.
A visit to the Jardin de la Fontaine, France’s first public
garden created in 1750, is another refreshing outing, with trees and
artful streams to please the senses. A little wander around the many
squares of the city, discovering cafes and fountains is an experience
in itself.
